Checking a returned contract, clause by clause
When a counterparty sends back "the same agreement with minor tweaks", the tweaks are what matter. Load your version and theirs: the word-level view shows each changed figure, date and obligation in place. The example above changes a start date, a fee, the payment window and the notice period, and adds an auto-renewal clause and a post-term confidentiality period, all inside sentences that otherwise look the same.
Then use Summarise the changes with AI for a plain-English list of what moved, with changes that alter meaning (numbers, deadlines, obligations) called out. Treat the summary as a reading aid and check it against the highlighted diff, which is the exact record.
What gets compared
- Word .docx: body text, including text in tables and lists, is extracted with the open-source Mammoth library. Comments and tracked-change markup are not included.
- PDF: selectable text is extracted page by page with Mozilla's PDF.js. Line breaks follow the PDF's layout, so turn on Ignore whitespace (on by default here) to avoid false changes from reflowed lines.
- Text you paste from Google Docs, Pages or email works just as well.
Questions
How do I compare two Word documents?
Click Open file on each side and choose the two .docx files (or drag both onto the page at once). The text of each document is extracted in your browser and compared word by word. Older .doc files need to be saved as .docx first.
Can I compare two PDFs?
Yes, if the PDFs contain selectable text (most PDFs exported from Word, Google Docs or a website do). Scanned PDFs are images of pages; comparing them would need OCR, which this tool does not do.
Does it compare formatting too?
No. It compares the words. Bold, fonts, colours, tables layout, headers and page breaks are ignored. For many uses (contracts, essays, policies) that is exactly what you want, because it hides noise and shows real wording changes.
Is it safe for confidential documents?
The files are read and compared inside your browser tab; they are not uploaded. The optional AI summary is the only feature that sends anything, only when you click it, and only the changed passages with a little context.
How is this different from Track Changes or Word's Compare feature?
Word's Review > Compare produces a redline inside Word and needs the desktop app. This works on any device, including phones, handles PDF against Word, and gives a readable side-by-side view plus a summary. Use Word if you need to accept/reject changes inside the document itself.
